Doctor Wespe, ca. 1875-1890.

Eleven handwritten role books (actors' scripts) for rehearsal of the play, one of which is labeled as belonging to Theodor Bloch's theater lending-library, Philadelphia. The following roles are represented: Herr von Zündorf; Elizabeth; Thekla (two versions); Theudelinde; Wespe; Ludwig Honau, Maler; Wellstein; Schreier; Christoph; and Adam. One of the two versions of the role book for Thekla appears to be from a slightly different time period than the other books. It is the only one of the books that bears a subtitle for the play: "Lustspiel in 5 Acten" (the other books use the spelling "Akt"). All of the remaining role books appear to have been produced at the same time, and two of them bear the names of actors who appeared in other performances of German-language plays in Philadelphia from the mid 1870s through the 1880s. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills do not, however, contain any reference to this play.)
